Purruna-arra: To go through life.
“To go through life with connection to country, to community, culture and identity is vital to my wellbeing. Accepting my past and life experiences have lead me to adapt new mindsets to grow stronger mentally and spiritually. To go through life, to learn and to share knowledge is my way of paying my respects to those who’ve come before me.” — Kooka
The Purrana-arra Jersey is a collaboration with nationally recognised artist Shane Mankitya Cook (aka ‘Kooka’) — a proud Wulli Wulli and Guwa (Koa) descendant from Queensland, and adopted by the local Aboriginal Kaurna community in Adelaide, South Australia.
Shane’s practice as an artist began from a young age learning traditional painting from his mother, his interests then developed further into graffiti culture, street art and tattooing as he got older. These art movements are hugely prominent in Shane’s unique contemporary style. His works of art know no material boundaries from working on canvas, to participating in street art festivals, artist exchanges internationally and creating large scale murals.Shane has designed Indigenous Round football guernseys and boots for AFL and NBL teams, created artwork for boxer Anthony Mundine.
Shane’s most recent enterprise is the Street Dreamz: Artist Mentoring Program, a project that is “Exploring identity. Creating change. Taking opportunities to learn and grow. Improving mental health and well-being through arts, movement and mentoring. Working with communities: Locally, Nationally, Internationally.”
